Although declining to state which bottled waters were tested, C-crest Laboratories recently conducted testing that determined that several popular brands of bottled water contained high amounts of heterotrophic bacteria.
According to the United States Phamacopeia (USP) no more than 500 colony forming units (cfu) of bacteria per milliliter should be present in drinking water. This study says that 70% of the brands tested exceeded that amount, and actually contained more bacteria than tap water.
